Error -6000, -301: An error occurred when Reckon Accounts tried to access the company file

Legacy KB ID: 389

Problem:

I am encountering the following error when I try to access my company file:

Error -6000 -301: "An error occurred when Reckon Accounts (formerly QuickBooks) tried to access the company file".

Reason:

This error will sometimes occur if the file has been damaged during transfers to USB or via email, or if the file is opened in the wrong Hosting configuration.

Solution:

The first step would be to move the file from any external storage and/or network location, and move it local to your machine/to Reckon Accounts. You should copy the file to either your Desktop or Documents, as this can avoid potential connection or security problems.

Before attempting the following steps, ensure that you have toggled "Stop Hosting/Host Multi-User Access" in Reckon Accounts.

To do so, follow below:

  1. Go to the File menu in the top-left-hand corner.
  2. Hover-over "Utilities".
  3. Select "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access" ~ "Host Multi-User Access".
  4. Try to open the company file.
    1. If you encounter further errors, please follow our network troubleshooting guide here.

If this does not work, but you are able to access the company file elsewhere, attempt the following:

  1. Open the company file.
  2. Perform a Verify of the Data. To do so, follow below:
    1. Go to the File menu in the top-left-hand corner.
    2. Hover-over "Utilities".
    3. Select "Verify data".
  3. Rebuild and Verify the file. To do so, follow below:
    1. Go to the File menu in the top-left-hand corner.
    2. Hover-over "Utilities".
    3. Select "Rebuild data".
    4. When asked to make a backup, do not override existing backups
  4. Ensure that the message “No errors found” is returned.
    1. If errors found, repeat the Verify and Rebuild steps (Steps 2 and 3).
    2. If errors persist, examine the QBWin.log file.  To view:
      1. With the company file open, press the CONTROL key and the 1 key at the same time, or press F2 on your Keyboard. This should open the Reckon Accounts Product Information window.
      2. Press the CONTORL and the 2 key at the same time, or press F3 in the Reckon Accounts Product Information window. This will open the Reckon Accounts Technical Help window.
      3. Click on the Open Files tab.
      4. Select QBwin.log and click on Open File.
      5. Save this document for Data Recovery, then examine it for any errors - you can search for them using the search bar on this help website for any potential solutions.
  5. If you are able to access the file, you can always attempt to re-enter data since the last backup.

Should these steps fail, we strongly recommend sending the company file to Reckon Data Services.

You can fill out the form on our website to begin a conversation with them.
